A creek in New Jersey needed to be temporarily diverted for work to the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline (Transco). This project used a single closed end (SCE) AquaDam as the cofferdam in a staggered configuration. A Jersey barrier was placed against the upstream SCE AquaDam for additional support. Dunnage material was placed between the Jersey barrier and AquaDam to mitigate any rubbing.
Looking downstream at the de-watered work area. The Transco trench parallels the SCE AquaDam and is in front of the two culverts. The second SCE AquaDam is on the downstream end of the culverts. Can you see the white material?
Multiple pumps were used to divert the creek water around the work area. It is important to know that when damming flowing water, the pool upstream will rise until the flow has been matched by a diversion.
Standing at the starting bank and looking at the ending bank of the upstream SCE AquaDam. The starting point (open end) and fill-tubes have been tied back to keep them from moving downhill. A SCE AquaDam requires a starting bank to keep its open end and fill-tubes higher in elevation than the body of the AquaDam. The open end and fill-tubes of a SCE AquaDam must stay elevated higher than the full height of the dam along its given path. An AquaDam will only reach its full height at the lowest elevation along its given path.
The closed end is still rolled up and has been tied back to prevent it from unrolling anymore, here at the ending bank.
The Transco trench that was being worked on. The upstream SCE AquaDam is just below the orange pumps and the downstream SCE AquaDam is not visible to the right of the operating equipment.
Looking just downstream of the upstream SCE AquaDam. Seepage should be expected with any cofferdam.
The downstream culverts can be seen in this photo. The downstream SCE AquaDam can barely be seen behind the trench.
The downstream SCE AquaDam is being removed.
The Transco has been repaired and the creek is back to its original state.
Looking upstream after both dams have been removed. Wonderful job AquaDam!
